Accredited investor
An accredited investor is an individual or entity that meets specific financial or professional criteria set by the SEC, allowing them to invest in private markets, such as hedge funds, startups, and private equity deals.
To qualify, you must meet one of the following:
- Income: $200,000 per year (or $300,000 with a spouse) for the last two years, with expectations to continue.
- Net Worth: Over $1 million in net worth, excluding your primary residence.
- Professional Certification: Hold a Series 7, Series 65, or Series 82 license.
Non-Accredited investor
A non-accredited investor is anyone who does not meet the income, net worth, or certification criteria of an accredited investor. Most individuals fall into this category.
They are restricted from some high-risk investments but can still:
- Invest in public markets (stocks, ETFs, mutual funds)
- Participate in regulated crowdfunding (e.g., Wefunder, SeedInvest)
- Buy real estate or other alternative assets
